So.  How do you deal with someone like this, especially if you’re in a relationship with them or married to them, and walking away is not an option?  Try these …

  1. ACCEPT THEM  – there’s nothing you can do to change the way the person acts or treats you. You either accept them, learn how to cope with it, or move on.  If you chose to accept them, there are ways to help you cope – so please keep reading
  2. BREAK THE SPELL – don’t allow them to gain access to your self-worth or let them define your world. Keep reminding yourself of WHAT YOU WANT, YOUR GOALS, YOUR STRENGTHS,
  3. SPEAK UP FOR YOURSELF – tell them how they’re making you feel, and what they’re saying is not how you want to be treated.  Do this in a calm manner, and don’t let them see you get flustered or annoyed as this just gives them the power to continue.
  4. SET BOUNDARIES –  most narcissists don’t care about your personal space as they feel entitled to what’s yours is theirs. Make it clear that’s not acceptable and there are boundaries that are not to be crossed.  Don’t make threats, but whatever you say just make sure you follow through or they won’t believe you the next time
  5. EXPECT PUSH-BACK – especially if you’ve just set some boundaries in which case they’ll pull a guilt trip on you and try to make you feel like you’re being unreasonable and controlling. Stand your ground
  6. REMEMBER THE TRUTH – Usually, a narcissist feels they never make mistakes, and getting one to own up probably won’t happen. Whatever they’re selling you – don’t buy it. You know the truth
  7. FIND SUPPORT – living with a narcissist is draining, it wears you down and makes you emotionally beaten. Find a support network, start communicating with old friends, and get active by volunteering for a charity or joining a club. Do something that lets you make new friends
  8. DEMAND ACTION – don’t let them make promises to you that their behavior will end as they’ll likely be just empty promises. Actions speak louder than words and tell them to walk the walk. Be consistent with this request as this will help them see you mean business
  9. REALIZE THEY NEED HELP  We know that a narcissist NEVER thinks they have a problem. So you can suggest counseling or for them to seek help, but chances are they won’t. Just remember it’s them with this problem and not you.
  10. TAKE CARE OF YOUas I said before, living or dealing with a narcissist is draining and it will begin to take a toll on your physical and mental health. Reach out to family and friends, call a support system, make an appointment to see a therapist, or see your doctor for a check-up. You don’t have to go through this hell alone. You’ll be surprised at how much help is out there for you.

Just remember NARCISSISM is a personality disorder.   YOU DID NOT make this persons actions and YOU ARE NOT responsible for the way this person treats you.  My best advice is if you’re planning on staying with this individual, then for your mental well-being and over-all health – find a good support system.
