Best Skincare Routine for Women Over 50

Is it too late to start taking care of your skin when you’re 50?

Best Skincare Routine for Women Over 50 and is it too late to start taking care of your skin. The answer is a big fat NO. Just like it’s never too late to quit smoking, or never too late to start eating healthier, or never too late to start exercising, or never too late to get some joy or less stress in your life. Wow – are those all loaded answers or what?

But let’s talk skin – your face. Now that you’re in your 50’s, you’re going to start noticing some changes in your facial skin. Whether it’s sagging skin, jowls due to bone loss, a sunken look due to fat loss, more lines, more wrinkles, age spots and hyperpigmentation, moles and skin tags, or drier flakier skin. Oy – what a list.

While I get that some ladies are OK with the “growing older look, it’s going to happen, there’s nothing I can do about it” – and that’s cool, you have to be you. But there are others, LIKE ME, who have become self-conscious about the way their skin has changed. LIKE ME, who aren’t looking for a total transformation – but are just looking to slow it down a bit or maybe redirect the changes in a more positive way.

I can honestly say a lot of my facial problems are a direct result of being a sun-goddess in my teens and 20’s – something I deeply regret and am now a big advocate of sunscreen. And now that I’m 50+ I’ve really started paying attention to my face. I think the wake up call was when my sister-in-law asked me what kind of moisturizer I used and was aghast when I responded with … hand lotion? And this was AFTER I went through a laser skin resurfacing procedure, which BTW gave me THE BEST RESULTS but was painful to say the least. That’s a story for another time. And what I started using right after our convo, was a product called jojoba oil … which actually put a lot of moisture back into my facial skin.

But afterwards I started adding a whole routine to my skincare – one that I’d like to share and highly recommend for every women over age 50. It was a matter of getting used to spending an extra 10 minutes on my face in the morning, and then that extra 10 minutes at night before bed. And now that I’ve done this religiously on a daily basis, it’s become second nature to me – one that YOU TOO can get used to doing.

So come on ladies – It’s never too late to start a good skincare routine in the morning and in the evening. Not only will it give you glowing, great looking skin – but it will also have you feeling so much better about yourself. You can always tackle the other bullshit going on in your life another day. But for today – do this for you.

The A.M. Skincare Routine

The A.M. Routine
I have 4 products I use in the morning (you might be saying WHAT???), but seriously – it’s not that big of a deal. Once you do it a few times and start to see and feel results – trust me, it will just become second nature to you.

1) Start with a Mild, Gentle Cleanser. Why a cleanser in the morning? Even while you’re sleeping your skin can accumulate environmental dirt – dirt like dead skin cells and allergens from the air and your pillowcase. So by using a facial cleanser in the morning, you’re simply removing the collected impurities and giving yourself a fresh start. Just make sure you use a mild, gentle cleanser, and not a harsh, drying product that will only over-strip your skin.

neutrogena oil free acne face wash

What do I recommend and what do I use? There are 5 products which I highlighted in my other post SAY GOODBYE ADULT ACNE that are extremely gentle, not expensive, and are just totally awesome products. But I like the Neutrogena Cleansing Products and use the Neutrogena Oil Free Salicylic-Acid Cleanser. It’s oil-free, gentle, and is the #1 cleanser recommended by dermatologist especially if you’re experiencing acne breakouts.

2) Next, apply a good Regeneration Growth-factor Serum, one that adds collagen synthesis and targets those fine lines and wrinkles. Fine lines and wrinkles are caused by the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin, which results in loss of strength and elasticity. So by adding collagen and elastin, it provides the support structure for skin and helps to keep it smooth and resilient.

Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Retinol Regenerating Anti-Aging Face Cream

What do I recommend and what do I use? Once again I’ve stuck with Neutrogena – they’ve got a great product called Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Retinol Regenerating Anti-Aging Face Cream. It helps plump your skin with moisture-rich replenishers and helps reduce the look of deep wrinkles, including crow’s feet, forehead, and cheek wrinkles. The price is right AND Neutrogena offers a money back guarantee on their products.

3) Then, Moisturize Your Skin with a cream that helps restore your skin’s barrier.

Neutrogena Oil Free Moisture Daily Hydrating Facial Moisturize

What do I recommend and what do I use? Yes – I’m sticking with Neutrogena again. This one’s called Neutrogena Oil Free Moisture Daily Hydrating Facial Moisturize. It gentle, absorbs quickly into your skin and eliminates dryness, is oil free and won’t clog your pores or cause breakouts, adds moisture and hydration so your skin feels soft and smooth, and it’s free of fragrances, alcohol and dyes. That’s a mouthful. Click this link for a great price on this products.

4) And finish off with a good Sunscreen as you have to keep those darn sunrays from scorching your face. After I had my laser resurfacing procedure I went to Walmart and searched for a 100+ sunscreen as there was NO WAY I’d ever resurface my face again.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer 100+

What do I recommend and what do I use? I bought the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer 100+ and have been using it religiously on my face for the past 6 years. Best product ever at a very low price. Now obviously you don’t have to be as extreme as me with the 100 protection, but do get a good sunscreen for your face and use it even when it’s cloudy. Your face will thank you.

The P.M. Skincare Routine

And now for the P.M. Routine
1) Again wash with your Gentle Cleanser. Like I mentioned above, I use the Neutrogena Oil Free Salicylic-Acid Cleanser. This time to remove all dirt that accumulated on your face throughout the day and to remove any makeup you may have been wearing.

2) Next use a Growth Factor Serum for those stubborn wrinkles while adding moisture, elasticity, and smoothness to your skin.

Age Gracefully - EGF Serum by Catherine Jinn.

What do I recommend and what do I use? This is the only product I use that is not by Neutrogena – it’s the Age Gracefully – EGF Serum by Catherine Jinn. The ingredient list of Hyaluronic Acid, Peptides, and Collagen, really do wonders for your skin. The product is not expensive and can be bought at a really good price here.

3) Apply a good Night Cream – one that combats hyperpigmentation, age spots, helps firm your skin and add overnight hydration.

Neutrogena's Triple Age Repair Night Cream

What do I recommend and what do I use? I use Neutrogena’s Triple Age Repair Night Cream. This night face cream targets aging—wrinkles, uneven skin tone and firmness, 3 BIG ISSUES WITH AGING. You WILL see a difference in four weeks. The Neutrogena formula is proven to work – and they back it up with a money back guarantee. Click here for a great price

And there you have it – my morning and evening skincare routine. Like I said before it may seem like a lot, but I promise … once you start doing these applications to your face, you’ll look forward to it as the results are truly amazing. Let me know what you think – pros and cons. All is welcome.
