WHY IS MY NIPPLE HURTING?

When To See A Doctor For Breast And Nipple Pain.  Do you have nipple pain? Are there visible changes to your nipple? Is your nipple discharging? Do you have breast pain that’s not going away and it’s not related to your period? Are your breasts reddened, swollen, with dimpled or orange-peel skin? Have you found a lump? Are your breast painful because of the lump?

These are all important signs that you need to make an appointment with your doctor immediately. And even tho most cases of breast pain are mild and easily managed, you do not want to delay a diagnosis of breast cancer – it’s better to be safe than sorry. Preventative care is always the best route to go.

Let’s talk about NIPPLE PAIN as this is what I’m experiencing today. And yes, I have made an appointment with my doctor but unfortunately the earliest she can see me is the end of week. But at least I’ll find our what’s going on here.

WHY IS MY NIPPLE HURTING

So for women, sore nipples are very common among those who are going through – their PERIOD, being PREGNANT, and BREASTFEEDING.  AND WE ALL KNOW THOSE DAYS ARE LONG GONE so I can rule those out. So what else could be making my nipple so sore?

  1. FRICTION – One of the most common, and easily cured causes of nipple pain is wearing tight or ill-fitting undergarments and clothing, or a bra that doesn’t fit right.
  2. ALLERGIC REACTION – Have you switched laundry detergents recently? Body Lotion? Soap? Fabric Softener? Perfume? Signs that it may be an allergic reaction are red or chapped skin around the nipple and areola, or a persistent itchiness, or a rash.
  3. INFECTIONS – if your nipples have already been injured due to friction or an allergy, or are cracked or bleeding, there is now a risk of an infection. Get them diagnosed by your doctors and maybe all that is needed is an antibiotic. Infections that can occur are:
  4. YEAST INFECTION – which your nipples can get. It can be caused by Candida Albicans – a result of damage to the surrounding tissues, recent antibiotic use, or if you have a history of fungal infections.
  5. THRUSH – when your nipples are burning or you have a stinging pain. They may be bright pink and the areola may be flaky and reddish.
  6. MASTITIS – this is when you’ll need an antibiotic. Don’t let it go as you may get an abscess
  7. SEXUAL CONTACT – body friction or any sexual activity that involves the nipples could be the cause of your soreness.
  8. HORMONAL CHANGES – if you’re sexually active your once a month friend is your saving grace, but for some it’s their worse nightmare. Cramps, backaches, and sore nipples and breasts are usually felt just days before your period starts.
  9. CANCER – some nipple pain and other symptoms could be a sign of cancer, however as we all know cancer is the SILENT killer. Tumors don’t usually cause pain.  BUT MOST DEFINITELY … SEE A DOCTOR.

Scary thing tho – nipple pain caused by cancer will often only affect ONE breast and nipple. And that’s what I’ve got – one sore nipple. So this doctors appointment I’ve scheduled can’t come soon enough.  I’ll give an update once I know myself.

*** TURNS OUT IT WAS NOTHING SERIOUS – only a small infection that an antibiotic could fix. Thank you Jesus
